THE POWERFUL EFFECTS OF MENTAL TOUGHNESS by JAMES PERRYWith the recent passing of the one-year mark since the Covid19 pandemic began, the long-term effects have become more apparent. A recent study in the US found that 1 in 4 adults reported symptoms of anxiety or depression, up from 1 in 10 in 2019. The increased levels of stress and anxiety have also been accompanied by poorer sleep and increased alcohol and substance use exacerbating mental health problems further. The impact of the pandemic was greater among women, students, and people with preexisting health problems. Additionally, research has shown that some people having certain personality traits seem to have offered some level of protection during these difficult times. Having “mental toughness” has helped many people to keep the adverse mental health effects of the pandemic at bay.

Mental toughness is about more than just having resilience and self-control in difficult situations. It relates to a frame of mind that endorses confidence and commitment to success. Mental strength is something that is developed over time by people who choose to make personal development a priority. Much like seeing physical gains from working out and eating healthier, we must develop healthy mental habits, like practicing gratitude. A mentally tough individual sees challenge and adversity as an opportunity and not a threat and has the confidence and positive approach to take what comes and make the best of it.

When life knocks you down, are you quick to pick yourself up and adapt to the circumstances? Many people develop mental toughness through the experience of failure. Be willing to take risks and scramble out of bad positions, and when difficult situations arrive, keep pushing! Encountering adversity and continuing to push forward is going to improve your mental toughness and ultimately make you better. If you have your goals set on something worthwhile you must know there are going to be set backs. You need to be prepared to deal with them and keep your eyes on the prize. I guarantee you anyone that has achieved a significant goal has dealt with adversity and had to stay on course.

You can help your children become mentally tough by teaching them skills to develop their resilience, curiosity, confidence, and growth mindset. Mental Toughness is not about acting tough. It’s about having the inner strength to persevere and chase personal goals. It’s about being happy in your own skin. It’s about having the confidence to get outside your comfort zone to grow. Most parents do not want their children to fail and I understand that. But today, too many blame others for their failure. Parents are quick to blame the teacher for problems in class or a coach when the child is not excelling in an activity. Mental toughness cannot be developed properly when blaming others. In fact, the opposite is the case. It’s about dealing with pressure, stress and challenges with a positive mindset.

The investment markets have had a pretty good run over the last few years. A lot of people have forgotten about the events of 2008 (‘what Global Financial Crisis?’). When money is involved, our emotions and ego come into play. If we add in an almost infinite number of things to consider when making investment decisions, it is easy to understand why even the brightest of the bright find sustained success in the financial markets to be frustratingly elusive. Mentally tough investors know exactly what is important to them about money and what they want to achieve and are committed to making it happen.

When you are resolute, you make decisions that service your ultimate goals. When you are committed to yourself and your family, you will make decisions (even uncomfortable ones) that achieve the things that are important to you. Discipline and mental toughness are arguably the most important elements of long-term investing.

There is a good book called ‘Who Moved My Cheese’ that is all about assessing ever-changing circumstances, adapting, and overcoming. In other words, embrace change. You are not defeated by setbacks. Think positively about changing your future. The beauty of mental toughness is that it is not bestowed upon a lucky few, it is something that you can work on over time. And it will also help you for the rest of your life.
