why-god

Last November 15th shortly before Thanksgiving the greatest dog in the world passed from this life to the next.

To be candid, I never wanted a dog. But, I had a beautiful little daughter who can be very persistent that had to have a puppy dog. After visiting every pet store in every mall and escaping without a dog, one fateful day at Fashion Island at the most expensive pet store on the planet, our life was changed. Popa, can we just take that little dog into the room and play with him for a minute, my daughter asked, my wife had succumbed to the pressure and my son didn’t help either. Next thing you know we are all in a room with this adorable little white ball of fur jumping around playing joyfully. He jumped on me with his little tail wagging eagerly as if to say “nice to meet you! We’ll have fun today! If your looking for a cute, cuddly little dog, keep me in mind!” It was over, the issue was settled our dogless days were over.

I didn’t pick him out, I didn’t really want him but at least I got to name him and Herbie Husker became part of our family. He moved up from a crowded kennel to a giant suburban home. Despite the several dog beds scattered around our home, Herbie set his eyes on ours as his preferred sleeping spot. At first he would wait for an invitation, his snout and front paws perched on the side of the bed. But a few weeks in he realized the He was King of the house and began jumping into His rightful place in the middle of our bed.

I had “take the dog for a walk duty” every day. This little guy would drag me all over the neighborhood zig-zagging and smelling everything in sight. It is a miracle that he never sprained his nostrils. He wouldn’t jump into our pristine swimming pool, but jumped enthusiastically into every scum cover puddle of water he could find. He was a curious joyful little guy, unless he spotted another dog, then he would turn into Fred Sanford (Sanford & Son) and bark ferociously at the biggest baddest dogs in the neighborhood. He thought he was the Mike Tyson of the dogs in the neighborhood.

Everyone loved Herbie Husker, and he returned their affection, offering enthusiastic greetings to friends. Herbie enjoyed coming to the office where he quickly interrupted all the priorities of everyone at work. He had his own bed and bowl in his own office that he graciously shared with Alexandra and Amber. He has appeared in 100s of videos and thousands of photos shared all over cyberspace. He appears in more pictures on Shanna’s phone and social media than her Husband, Son and Daughter combined. We even had a portrait of his Royal Highness, fluffy white fur, black snout and gentle eyes painted that hangs in our home. In fact I recently did some succession planning with an estate attorney and we now have a Handsome Herb Dynasty Trust.

I am no theologian, but I believe God grants us dogs to encourage us to give and receive unconditional love – to see loyalty personified and to remind us that we must balance joy and delight with loss and grief in this transitory life.

I am so grateful Herbie was part of our family for 16 years. He will always be in our hearts.

RIP Herbie Husker
